Whitsundays Tourism News

Thursday, February 12, 2009

Love was in the air in the Whitsundays last month, with 3 romantic proposals of marriage made very public.

One lucky-in-love visitor to the region was surprised and thrilled to see the huge words ‘Rach will u marry me’ written in the sand across the entire Airlie Beach Foreshore from the cabin of a bubble helicopter.

Captain Pete Ryan of Aviation Adventures said Rach’s proposal was the third of the month, with scenic helicopter flights over Airlie Beach and world famous Whitehaven Beach very popular for proposals.

“We have around 15 marriage proposals each year, but this last month love was definitely in the air!” Mr Ryan said.

Tourism Whitsundays Chief Executive Officer Peter O’Reilly agreed, saying the Whitsundays has that special romantic feeling about it.

“Around 1,200 couples get married in the Whitsundays each year, and it is impossible to count how many proposals there are,” Mr O’Reilly said.
“Public proposals such as writing in the sand, or diving on the reef and finding a ring, or romantic sunset sailing cruises, or sky writing are regular occurrences here in the Whitsundays,” he said.

“Or the ultimate romance, a scenic flight over Heart Reef, is also a popular choice for proposals,”

“With the Whitsundays’ sparkling azure seas, tropical islands and the heart of the Great Barrier Reef as a backdrop, it’s easy to see why so many people become enchanted in the romance of this place.”
